Joaquim Alberto Pires de Lima nasceu em Santo Tirso, em 1877. Estudou na Academia Politécnica do Porto e, depois, na Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto, onde concluiu o curso de Medicina com a defesa da dissertação inaugural – “Estudos sobre a conjunctivite granulosa“, em 1903.
Joaquim Alberto Pires de Lima was born in Santo Tirso, in 1877. He first studied at Academia Politécnica do Porto and then Porto Medical-Surgical School, where he finished the medical course with the defense of the inaugural dissertation Studies on granular conjunctivitis.

The following year he was appointed head of Clinical Surgery and two years later became a substitute lens for the Medical and Surgical School of Porto, with the dissertation Forensic Medicine in Portugal. Historical outline.
Em 1907, foi transferido para a secção cirúrgica, ficando proprietário da 15.ª cadeira – Anatomia Topográfica. Foi, também, nomeado bibliotecário da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, funções que exerceu durante 40 anos. Em 1911, assumiu funções como professor de Anatomia. Foi regente de Anatomia Topográfica entre 1911 e 1918 ano apartir do qual foi regente da cadeira de Anatomia Descritiva. Jubilou-se em 1947.
In 1907, he was transferred to the surgical section, becoming the 15th chair – Topographic Anatomy. He was also appointed librarian at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, position he held for 40 years. In 1911, he became professor of Anatomy and Topographic Anatomy between 1911 and 1918, from which year he became the chair of Descriptive Anatomy until his retirement in 1947.
No ano de 1920, Joaquim Pires de Lima fundou e dirigiu o Instituto de Anatomia da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. Presidiu à Associação Médica Lusitana e à Delegação do Porto da Junta da Educação Nacional. Dirigiu a Repartição de Antropologia Criminal, Psicologia Experimental e de Identificação Civil do Porto (1928) e o Laboratório de Anatomia Descritiva (1929) e foi o 1.º secretário da Sociedade de Medicina e Cirurgia do Porto. Era especialista em Teratologia.
In 1920, Joaquim Pires de Lima founded and directed the Institute of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He chaired the Lusitanian Medical Association and the Porto Delegation of the National Education Board. He directed the Department of Criminal Anthropology, Experimental Psychology and Civil Identification of Porto (1928) and the Laboratory of Descriptive Anatomy (1929) and was the 1st secretary of the Society of Medicine and Surgery of Porto. He was a specialist in Teratology.
Colaborou em várias publicações periódicas, nomeadamente no “Porto Médico” e n’ “O Comércio do Porto” e escreveu trabalhos nas áreas da História e da História da Medicina, da Literatura, da Etnografia e da Antropologia das ex-colónias portuguesas. Participou em congressos e reuniões científicas, em Portugal e no estrangeiro, e, em 1932, fez uma viagem a França, Bélgica e Alemanha, financiada pela Junta de Educação Nacional.
Joaquim Pires de Lima collaborated in several periodical publications, namely in “Porto Médico” and “O Comércio do Porto” and wrote works in History and History of Medicine, Literature, Ethnography and Anthropology of the former Portuguese colonies. He participated in scientific congresses and meetings, in Portugal and abroad, and, in 1932, made a trip to France, Belgium and Germany, financed by the National Education Board.
Durante a sua vida e considerando a qualidade e enorme contributo científico foi distinguido com o título de grande oficial da Ordem de Santiago (1932), com o grande oficialato da Ordem da Instrução e com a medalha de Ouro da Câmara Municipal do Porto (1947).
During his life and considering the quality and enormous scientific contribution he was distinguished with the title of great officer of the Order of Santiago (1932), with the great officially of the Order of Instruction and with the Gold medal of the Porto City Council (1947).
Morreu a 23 de Dezembro de 1951 e deixou o seu espólio bibliográfico à Biblioteca da Faculdade de Medicina e a sua coleção de medalhas e insígnias de congressos ao Museu de História da Medicina Maximiano Lemos.
He died on December 23, 1951 and his library was left to the Library of the Faculty of Medicine, and his collection of medals and insignia of congresses to the Maximiano Lemos Museum of Medical History.
