Brains by catalogue – FENS History of Neuroscience Online

Este site é o resultado da minha busca por colecções de cérebros em Portugal, ao receber uma pequena bolsa da Federação Europeia de Sociedades de Neurociências (FENS) – História da Neurociência Online (1 150 euros para cobrir despesas com o domínio e servidor do site, fotografia, viagens e alojamento). O título do projeto vencedor é Brains by Catalogue. No entanto, quando desenhei este projecto não sabia se iria encontrar alguma coleção de cérebros. Com o tempo, percebi que apenas resta uma coleção de cérebros, presente no Instituto de Anatomia em Lisboa.

This website is the result of my quest for brain collections in Portugal upon being awarded a small grant from the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) – History of Science Online (1 150 euros to cover the website domain, lodging server, photography, travel and lodging costs). The winning project title is Brains by Catalogue. Nonetheless, at the time, I didn’t know if I was going to find any brain collections as such, but also with time, I came to realise that only one brain collection existed and still exists today, at the Instituto de Anatomia in Lisbon.

Iniciei este projecto em 2019, no tempo que tinha livre. Nessa busca, visitei museus anatómicos e outras instituições que poderiam expôr o cérebro humano. Como encontrei objetos extremamente valiosos em termos de história e de ciência, e encontrei pessoas extraordinárias, este site tornou-se agora o lugar para comunicar não apenas acerca das colecções que fui encontrando mas também sobre o conteúdo mais amplo do corpo humano, sua anatomia e principais actores. Desta forma, não posso intitular este site com o nome do projeto. Dura-mater parece, agora, o nome mais adequado, por ser uma palavra do Latim, e portanto a mesma palavra em português e inglês; e também porque é o nome da mais dura das três membranas cerebrais que protegem o cérebro de lesões imediatamente antes do crânio. De certa forma, associo-o ao recipiente de vidro no qual a maior parte das amostras do cérebro e espécimens anatómicas estão protegidas de choques provenientes do exterior.

In the beginning of 2019, I set out on this journey during my free time. On this quest, I visited several anatomical museums and other institutions in which human brain specimens could be found. Because I discovered extremely valuable objects and encountered extraordinary people this website became now the place to communicate not only about the brain collection and the brain specimens I came across, but also about the wider content on the human body, it’s anatomy and actors. This is the reason I cannot call this website the same name as the project. Dura-mater seemed, now, a suitable name given its Latin origin hence same word in both Portuguese and English; and also because it is the name of the hardest of the three brain membranes that protect the brain from injury just before the skull. In a way, I associate it with the glass recipient in which most of the brain specimens, and anatomical parts, are protected from the outside.

O site está organizado em secções distintas: Galeria apresenta informação sobre as colecções visitadas e apresenta algumas fotografias (por Bruno Martins ) de espécimes / objetos particulares; Pessoas apresenta pequenas biografias de actores relevantes da História da Medicina Portuguesa e da História da Anatomia em particular; Locais fornece um breve histórico das instituições visitadas; Explore apresenta entradas para outros museus e instituições relacionadas com a História da Medicina, Psiquiatria e Neurociências, em Portugal; e Bookshelf ou Estante que informa o leitor sobre livros selecionados de divulgação científica e medicina em Português e em Inglês.

The website is organised in distinct sections: Gallery features information about the visited collections and presents some photographs (by Bruno Martins) of particular specimens/objects; People presents small biographies of relevant actors of the Portuguese History of Medicine and History of Anatomy in particular; Places provides a brief history of the institutions visited; Explore features entries to other museums and institutions related to the History of Medicine, Psychiatry and Neuroscience, in Portugal; and Bookshelf which informs the reader on selected popular science and medicine books both Portuguese and English.

Não sou historiadora nem filósofa. Sou simplesmente uma pessoa curiosa sobre o mundo, o funcionamento do corpo humano e sua relação com o meio ambiente e e social. Esta curiosidade condicionou as minhas escolhas para estudar biologia, a especializar-me em genética e doutorar-me em neurociências. Além disso, também nutro um especial interesse por filosofia, antropologia, história e comunicação. Logo após o doutoramento, percebi que a minha curiosidade e ampla gama de interesses não permitiam o foco absoluto numa determinada pergunta de investigação. Decidi assim aproveitar algumas oportunidades para partilhar com o público o mesmo impacto que a ciência e a investigação sobre o funcionamento do corpo humano em particular, tiveram sobre mim. Espero assim despertar no leitor alguma curiosidade para estas coleções, sua breve história e atores, e importância da sua preservação para o património científico e cultural do país. Se o leitor ficar curioso o suficiente para visitar alguns destes lugares, terei cumprido o meu objectivo.

I am not an historian nor a philosopher. I am simply a curious person about the world, the functioning of the human body and its interconnectedness with the environment and other people, in social groups. This curiosity lead me to study biology, to specialise in genetics and doctorate in neuroscience. Additionally, I also became interested in philosophy, anthropology, history and communication. Soon after my PhD, I realised my curiosity and wide range of interests did not allow the absolute focus on a particular research question. I would rather share with the public the same marvellous and owe impact that science and the human body research, in particular, had on me. Now I just hope to do the job and that the reader may discover a bit more about these collections, their brief history and actors. If you become curious enough to visit these places yourself, then I think my task was accomplished.
